There is no formal academic advising available to students in the Human Rights Studies M.A. The Program Coordinator and Associate Dean act as the primary advisors to students and assist in the selection of courses, registration, and completion of the degree.
Several faculty members, however, are available for informal academic advising and guidance regarding the thesis.
Academic Advisors
Academic advisors are available to Human Rights Studies students during office hours or by appointment for consultation on appropriate courses for a particular research interest or career goal. Students are not assigned to specific advisors but should contact advisors with similar research interests as their own. Advisors are available to offer insight on course subjects that may help students meet objectives of their degree, but they are not familiar with degree requirements or the policies and regulations of the degree. Students are encouraged to remain in contact with the Program Coordinator or Associate Dean regarding the rules and regulations of the degree.
Current academic advisors:
Joseph Chuman (Religion), jc885@columbia.edu
Jennifer Hirsh (Sociomedical Sciences), jsh2124@columbia.edu
J. Paul Martin (Human Rights, Barnard), jmartin@barnard.edu
Eugenia McGill (School of International and Public Affairs), em419@columbia.edu

Thesis Consultants
Thesis consultants are available to Human Rights Studies students during office hours or by appointment to discuss possible research topics and assist students in identifying a specific, clear, and plausible thesis subject. Consultants are available to help students target thesis topics; they will not tell a student what to research. Students should meet with consultants well before the thesis proposal is due, even as early as the first term of study. Students should note consultants are not thesis readers (supervisors), and students are responsible for finding their own thesis readers. For further information about the thesis, visit the Current Students Thesis webpage.
Thesis consultants are:
Elazar Barkan (School of International and Public Affairs), eb2302@columbia.edu
Yasmine Ergas (Center for the Study of Human Rights), ye36@columbia.edu
J. Paul Martin (Human Rights, Barnard), jmartin@barnard.edu
Andrew Nathan (Political Science), ajn1@columbia.edu
